I’m wary against dating coworkers but apparently, some of you have hot coworkers you’d maybe want to take out. If that’s the case, here’s how to do it:
1. Figure out if it’s worth it
If you get rejected, or date for a bit and it ends poorly, how much does this impact your day-to-day? Would dating this person represent a conflict of interest? It’s for you to decide the impact to your career. If it’s worth the risk (or if there are no risks) go for it.
2. Approach it Delicately
There is a thin line between attraction and interest versus being nice and complimentary to a coworker. In a bar you might tell someone they’re hot, but in the office you should use language that’s a less strong to show interest.
ex. You’re really interesting, I’d love to get to know you outside of a work setting.
3. If Rejected, Take it Gracefully
Remember, you decided to ask this person out and they are under no obligation to return your interest. Don’t take it personal and don’t let it impact your professional relationship with them.
4. Don’t be Pushy
If you’ve gotten a rejection, or hints that they’re not really interested in dating you, don’t become pushy. You want to avoid creating a hostile work environment.
5. Ask them out for something casual
Here’s where you gauge their interest and determine if this is a work friend, or if they have dating potential. Ask them out for lunch, coffee, or a post work happy-hour. Avoid asking them out for a date until they’ve made it clear they’re interested in you romantically.
6. Be Discreet
If after all of those steps you ask them out and they say yes, don’t broadcast it to all your coworkers! Exercise a little discretion.
